A Sound Move Tele-Intervention Project

"A Sound Move - Early Intervention Tele-Health Project for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Newborns and Infants"

"A Sound Move" is a pilot project designed to meet the needs of families whose newborns have been diagnosed as deaf or hard-of-hearing and intends to reach out to families living in suburban, rural and remote areas throughout the province of BC. The tele-intervention service provides families with an accessible, affordable and comprehensive early intervention programme for their child.

In British Columbia, Children's Hearing & Speech Centre of BC continues to be the only agency with licensed staff certified to practice Auditory-Verbal Therapy (AVT).  AVT is the 'best practice' standard of early intervention oral therapy for infants and toddlers who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Widely offered in other parts of Canada and internationally, information on AVT can be found through the AG Bell Association.

The principle of AVT is for a deaf and hard-of-hearing child to acquire good listening, speech and language skills, enter a ' mainstream' school, learn to advocate for themselves as they grow older and, ultimately, to make their own choices about life and career. AVT provides a positive path for families to follow in the growth and development of their child.
