Cochlear Implant Information Programme

Cochlear implants are surgically implanted electronic devices that help severely and profoundly hearing-impaired children to learn spoken language. A child undergoes extensive training to fully benefit from their cochlear implants. More than 50% of the children enrolled at VOC use cochlear implants. Our staff offers individualized services to children with implants, along with parent consultation. The VOC team works with B.C. Children’s Hospital, paediatricians, and others to ensure that  families are fully informed about cochlear implants and the outcomes that may be reached with appropriate individualized educational plans.

Pre-Implant training is provided for families and children prior to receiving a cochlear implant. After activation of the device, listening therapy takes place in weekly one-hour sessions and is continued based on your child’s needs. To ensure children are closely and adequately monitored, our auditory-verbal therapist, audiologist and teachers work together with parents and the Vancouver-based cochlear implant teams at B.C. Children's Cochlear Implant Services or at St. Paul's Hospital.

VOC services begin at the pre-implant stage and continue through the first few years of implant use. These services include:

  • Individual educational planning
  • One-on-one (re)habilitation sessions
  • Mapping
