Glossary of Terms

Oral Deaf Education — a programme that focuses completely on developing spoken language.

Aural /Auditory Comprehension — listening to others using hearing aids and/or cochlear implants in order to understand what is being said, either in a casual or structured setting.

Lip-reading or Speech-reading — a means by which one can acquire clues about what was said by watching the movements of the speaker’s mouth and accompanying facial expressions.

Habilitation — training designed to help a person with hearing loss to make productive use of residual hearing. It may include: use of hearing aids or cochlear implants, development of listening skills, speech/language therapy, providing information, or parent guidance.


Music Therapy - using music as the vehicle, music therapy provides strategies to cope with emotional, social and physical challenges. The creative process is applied to helping assist individuals to improve their mental, physical and emotional functioning.

Manual or Sign — the use of hand and/or finger movements in place of speech to represent ideas and words. There are various forms and styles of sign language throughout the world.

Total or Simultaneous Communication — the use of both hand-finger movements along with speech to express language and communicate with others.
