A primary focus for our educators is to develop activities and utilize equipment that stimulate spoken language and learning for deaf and hard-of-hearing children at all levels of early childhood development. Our faculty is made up of qualified teachers of the deaf, an Auditory-Verbal therapist, an audiologist, early childhood educators and teacher’s aides all of whom are open, approachable and accountable.
VOC teachers are experts in today’s listening technologies. Our teaching staff has expertise with state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that children derive maximum benefit from hearing aids and cochlear implants. This allows students to have a strong start in education and the acquisition of spoken language.
Throughout our programmes, parents participate in tutoring sessions with their child and the teachers. Our family-centred approach enhances parents’ abilities to use specific learning tools and to develop their child’s communications skills.
During the school year, the VOC coordinates special activities such as picnics and seasonal events to provide families with exchange and communication opportunities.
Admission to the VOC focuses first on the auditory-oral learning needs of the child who is deaf or hard of hearing and the oral deaf education approach.
Our school includes children with and without a hearing loss. Hearing children who attend are often siblings of an enrolled student, live in nearby neighbourhoods, or speak English as a second language. Our enriched language programme promotes early interaction between children with hearing loss and their hearing peers.
